But i live in mumbai now and I find very lil difference between the 2 metros apart from the fact that there is “beeda spit” all over the place here and I cant fucking understand Hindi and Marathi. Granted that divorce rates along with teen pregnancies and premarital sex among the youth are much higher in Mumbai than in CHennai, but still I wish ur highness would accept Chennai also in your ” exalted ” list of Metropolitan Cities.

Chennai is one city I so totally love! True, i hated it when i came here but with time i’ve learned more goods than bads and i wouldn’t think twice before declaring that its one of the best cities in India
as far as metropolitan status is concerned..so dude..even delhi doesn’t deserve that..before u jump to any conclusion..i’ve lived in delhi most of my life and love the place..but look around and see whether is this the way the capital of a country be treated?? Look at calcutta with all the pollution and narrower roads that u can ever think of and please dont even get me started abt mumbai. You land at mumbai airposrt and the first thing you see from the airplane window is a slum dwelling!!
Now i dont have anything against these cities, but yes thats the way it is!!
The language Tamil-which has a brilliant and rich literature btw. Infact u should be proud that people stick to their language and try to preserve it. Look what we did to Hindi!! please don’t tell me u talk in hindi. You’ve ruined the beautiful language hindi beyond repair.

I am a native tamilian & not a chennaite. From my experience of staying out of Tamil Nadu for the last 18 years, I really understand your frustration. In my initial days outside Tamil Nadu when I was in Himachal & worst was that I did know hindi at that time. I was usually(very easily) caught up in situations where I just cannot understand what other people are saying except few words which I learnt in Hindi when I was growing up. It was really a mess for me & really frustrating.
It is better that you stayed in Chennaim rest of tamil nadu even down south is increasingly worse for you. Chennai is metro & people have adapted to a mindset which fits well in the fast moving life. But deep inside tamil nadu north indians are like aliens & avoided. I have seen my parents, nears & dears doing it. This mentality is real crap. As kids such values were instilled into us & stereotypes automatically started taking there shape.
Personally I feel that I had always been very narrow minded all my life till the time I was in TN. But when I came out of my native land, met people of all various cultures, got to understand them well; now I know that all the stereotypes which developed in our minds were all negative thoughts & there is no truth attached to those.
We have a very narrow minded approach.

I visited Chennai in Dec and last week because my friend (from Delhi) works in Chennai. Even as a tourist from Hong Kong, I am sorry to say Chennai is a very difficult and unfriendly city for visitors from other countries or even from other parts of India.

I perhaps don’t know much about India or TN, my limited experience tells me that people in Chennai should learn English if not hindi.

Probably not many people will be speaking Tamil 20 years from now. Chennai has changed a century in five years. Five years ago, this was a big traditional village where no girl felt safe wearing jeans. You better have your dupatta draped just right. The problem with the guys is that they were not allowed to mix easily with girls growing up and seeing them just as people. So when the Tamil guys grow up–they go nutz and have a porn film going on in their head for every girl they see. Then they blame the girl.

Chennai was an incredibly traditional town, but because money talks, a lot of the old values left, but many have been caught in the adjustments and transitions. One generation is light years away from the other.

Then like Mumbai, a lot of villagers decided to shift to Chennai. They brought a coarseness and rudeness that wasn’t in the town before. They made it a lot more crowded. Go to Marina beach and you will see a pig stye.

Bangalore is not just a six hour train ride from Chennai. It’s a whole other world. There’s a laziness and unconcern about the city. Just throw rubbish anywhere. Pee anywhere–why? Do you want the girls to look? I don’t want to be gross, so I’ll leave it there. Tamil guys are taught no modesty while girls are expected to cover up in baggy clothes. We don’t like to see you swim in your soaking underwear. While if we show a leg, well it’s no marriage proposals for us if Auntie happens to see us.

The most exasperating thing about Chennai is that it so easily could be the best metro. Tamils, you are known for your pride–of your culture. Use that pride for your metro city. Hey, and the metro city is meant for foreigners and people from out. They bring you lots of money. Remember? You like money. So be more accommodating. Hi Randeep singh, what ever you have written is exactly right. I think who ever is not from Chennai feels the same. I think this place more like a village, which has not seen any outsider, so we are like alien or foreign items for them, so they stare at you like that.
The incident of office that you have written is also right. It is the only place I have seen where hard work is not appreciated, and brotherhood is appreciated. I have seen people slogging their A** and never recognised as they are not Tamilians, and people who dont work are appreciated, promoted and highlighted as they are Tamils. How can so many companies settle in such a asshole place? How can these companies dont go to other place so that we can also relocate to better place?

But for the Tamil bosses, they does not appreciate the inputs, and by mistake if they listen to the inputs, they will consult with their tamil brothers, and then if they like it they will accept it. If the input is accepted also, the appreciation will not be for the poor soul who came out with the idea, but the tamil brother who is closest to the manager will be appreciated.
This is again a point learnt while staying in the land of Tamils.
Open question to all Tamils, tell me one thing that rocks in Tamil Nadu or Chennai, I will not compare that with any other city, but you have to proove it that it rocks. They speak english so well that any voice and accent trainer thinks twice before taking any assignment in Chennai.
They are so efficient at work that they donot have to appear for any assessment to be promoted (make sure the Boss is Tamil as well) and they are so friendly and social that the moment they are out of chennai they will plead and pray to come back to this shitty place(because outside chennai they may not get a Tamil Boss or people who speak proper English —so how will they be promoted??????)

5. Tidal park(If you are a nerd, you will like it)
6. Safer than other metros
7. Movies.. not the new movies tho. I am 25 year old and still cant get enough of Sivaji Ganeshan’s movies.
8. Discotheques, Pubs.. although we cant Mumbai/Bangalore on this one, you will find a lot if you know where to look

And if you know Tamil I could add some more points, but I would assume all the haters here don’t know Tamil.

And to answer your question for best food try #4, best drink?? mmmm

11. Dharmasala
12. Mysore
13. bangalore.

The above mentioned is the list of places I have visited after growing up and I could have added some more which I visited during childhood. I am not adding them as I dont have a clear memory of those cities.
And after comparing with those cities which I have visited I can say that Chennai as a city sucks. Have you ever visited any of the above mentioned outside your so called Tamil world cities in your entire life?

1> Marina Beach. You call it a beach? Never maintained, dirty, full of waste and shit. Even small beaches at Puri or Shankarpur or even Digha has better beaches. Which are clean and tidy.
2> ECR road? have you been to DND FLyover at Delhi, outer Ring Road in Bangalore, or Rajarhat in Kolkata,they are better roads. I left out the Mumai Pune Expressway as comparing that road to ECR is like an insult to a road of that kind. How can ECR have resturants in it? The resturants are at both the side of the road. Learn English first.
3> Have you been to Haridwar or Hrishikesh or Kali temple at Kolkata, or Haji Ali at Mumbai or Golden Temple at Amritsar. They are anyday better temples. Here if you walk a kilometer, you will find temples, so volume wise I am sure the number is surely high, but quality, you wont get it.
4> who the hell on this earth wants to go to a resturant and have IDLI? If I need to go to a resturant I will have variery of other options. Thanks chennai for not giving me options of variety of resturants, I am able to save a lot and my entire credit card outstanding is Rs.0.00.
5> Tidal Park. Have you seen EC or ITPL in Bangalore, or Infinity at Kolkata, or any other Software Technoloy Park in Noida/Gurgaon, you will understand what I mean to say. Tidal Park can never come close to it.
6> Safer than other metros? Safety in which respect.People dont have normal driving or riding sence. They drive on the wrong side, use lights on high beam, never use blinkers, never wear helmets, triple riding on bikes, buses are over crowded and also rashly driven, auto drivers thinks that they are the son of Rajanikant and drive like hell without any sence.
7> Never seen any Sivaji Ganeshan’s movies so cannot comment. I know old is gold so I also watch olden movies may be hindi or english or my language. But still I get time to watch the quality new english , hindi and also regional movies. But sad to say, you being of this generation, you also dont watch those crappy Tamil movies, which can be compared to porn movies. Hats off to you dude.
8> Disc and pubs. Boss please dont talk about it. I am not a guy who regularly goes to disk to waste my money. I prefer sitting at my house, watching movies and drinking during my off days. Here you dont get any quality liqur at any of the so called liquor stores called tasmac, so I have stopped drinking. Again a lot of thanks for saving my money. To add to that, discs and pubs, do you know the meaning of that. I have seen better places.
As per your note you dont know where you get your traditional drink in your city? So as you dont know your city, how can we outsiders know better.

Well some sanity at last………. , Mr. Gupta I am in agreement with you on your last post some aspects . I would like to put forward few facts relating to the Tamils antagonism towards Hindi . Think once, if a tamil goes to karnatka or kerala and he tries to talk in english or hindi(if he knows) and the next person says I don’t know HINDI(even if he knows) and says that this is Kerala state and you should know MALAYALAM to live here and he is not ready to response you. Then What you will do? This is the real incident which happened with me more than 5 times and used to happen every person out of tamil nadu. Is it correct that we should learn all the language in india or we should go with HINDI.
China also has a lot off diversity in language but they also decided one language and named that chinees which is not spoken by more than 40% of china population. They never converse in english in their country.

You told about english, how many south indians or specifically Tamils are there who can speak proper english without MTI ( Mother Tongue Influence). I think not, because for analyzing you need brain, for brain to work you need proper nutrition. But as per your staple diet, dosai, idli, pongal, it has no nutrition, but only carbohydrate. Those carbohydrates gets converted to Fat and so brain full of Fat cannot analyze anything. So the end result is what ever anyone says in your language you accept it, as you do not know any other language.

I will agree to the fact that people have gutkha/pan masala/pan. No issues with that point and I accept the point. Thats like an addiction and any one can have any addiction in a free country like India. But those addictions are better than the shitty liquor available at the tasmacs. Regarding porn movies. I generally do not watch porn movies. But still if I have to watch, why the hell will I watch Tamil porn. Moreover if you have time please see the movie Memento, from where Ghajini is copied, you will understand how that guy has raped and killed the movie. Regarding getting bald. I have seen many people going to some temple and getting bald. For them they donate their hair to the temple. Boss tell me the logic of donating hair in a temple. Is that a thing to donate? You can donate money, ornaments, etc but why the hell is hair.
Moreover it is the only place where I have seen 60+ hero working with a 20+ yr heroine. What kind of logic is that. He may be a hero of the past, so make way for the new generations. I accept whatever you have writte. I have worked in Bangalore and also Hydrabad. I can understand both the language to some extent.
But please do not compare them with HELL called Chennai. I have travelled many cities in india and by far the most backward city I have seen in Chennai. Even Tamils who have worked in other palces also say or the same.
I still believe that I am an indian, but if you stay here you will seriously feel that you are outside india. I tried hard to find out some positive aspects of this city and found none and so started blogging about it.
If you need to know chennai please come and stay here for a couple of months and you will understand what I mean to say.

I’m working in chennai and tring to get adjusted here but the efforts I had to do is more. After completing two years life is more simpler than earlier. But people who ever is tring to prove chennai good here should look in to the problems instead of giving stupid comments. People from chennai have not visited any other place in india thats why they think chennai is good, which is correct if you will compare it with other places of tamil nadu.
I’ll not say that delhi is an ideal city but chennai is no where comparable to delhi or any other metro. not even with some other cities. People here always talks about culture: you should think that others are also cultured. LUNGI PAHN NA CULTURE NAHI KAHLATA TRADITION HOTA HAI. culture is what ever you are wearing that should look cool and should give a immpresive.
If I WEAR RED COLOUR SHOES WHY ONLY TAMILIANS ASK ABOUT IT?? IS THERE SOME THING RELATED TO YOUR CULTURE HERE ALSO THAT YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR RED COLOUR SHOES. If I have long here why only tamilians or some other south indians come and touch my hair(my friends can do that, but the person in my office should not do like this). If I spent my whole salaryin my way what is the problem with you guys. Ever I asked you that why you don’t spend a good amount on your living. If I’m going to post a letter, one south indian asked me what is it? and with out asking me he took it from my hand(he was not my close friend, just hi -hello kind of friendship from office). But my room mate from north never asked me that to whom I posted that. This is the problem with most of the tamilians and little of the other south indians.
Here I have proved that what ever things I found in tamilians can irretate any body.

I want to clear my stand once more, I don’t curse city for its physical location or climate but yes I always wants to move from here because of that.I don’t hate all the tamilians but I found most of them only for that.
I hate tamilians when they start talking about culture assuming that we are coming from jungle.when they don’t have any other point to win in a discussion.
Why they are always more concerned about my dressing and style . If they don’t have muscles then I can’t do anything. They should start to jog to reduce their tummy.
I hate auto walas and state government here. I hate people who believe blindly in their politicians. I hate people lying road side after drink.

I also accept that I had some good time in chennai and some bad also. It was bad because of localits thats why I hate tamilians generally. But it doesn’t mean that I hate every body with out knowing about him, but yes ,my experience gave me a view to genralize something about the tamilians.
I accept, I found some good people also here but most of them also accepted later that they also don’t like chennai people and government.
My problem is not with city its only with people. Most of them haven’t seen any place out of tamil nadu and tirupathi and think that

I appreciate your latest post on this topics i would like to say “well said”, to be frank i was actually sad to find the so many North Indian having such hatred for their fellow country men form the south specially Tamil in particular because we don’t speak the language or share the same food habits.But again that is India ,It is a great nation with greater diversity in geography ,demography and culture,food & language accepting one another with their own individuality is the essence of unity in any relationship ,let it be a community or an individual. So let us all try to find common ground were we accept or even tolerate sometime and try to rout out the division among us.As the saying goes united we stand divide we shall surely fall. I am here in chennai for the last 10months or so.I am from AP and I’ve stayed in Bangalore also. But this is the most annoying city I’ve ever seen!!!!
First thing is most of the houses dont have Windows and the rents are like
………oh my God.I was about to hit a house owner for asking 12k as rent for a small house, not even the size of a single bedroom, but converted to double bed room.
I have nothing to comment abt Tamil as its their language,but Hindi should also be accepted, if not English.
The autowalas charge nothing less than 10 rupees per km, which is equal to the fare of Innova with A/C.
Driving skills are awesome here. People wait at the extreme left of the road at signal to take a right turn. One thing, if you can drive safely in Chennai, you can drive any where in the world.
The Beach here is so damn ugly, I prefer not to go that side. I dont say everywhere it is or it shud be clean, but chennai beach line tops the Shit Rank.
Tamilians are definitely biased.In my client office here in Chennai, only Tamilians will get appreciation and good hikes. All the others are just junk to them. You sit and work till you A** bleeds but you will get a comment “Should do Better”.

This week I will be completing one year in Chennai, and seriously speaking I didnt find a single bit has changed. Nothing here will channge for the next few centuries to come. My suggestion to everyone try your hard best to leave this city as soon as possible.
I am also trying hard, but got stuck due to recession. One opportunity and I am out. I will not look for whether that is a better or not. I will just relocate frm this hell.

Hi,
Another point to prove that Chennai sucks and it is a overhyped city. People here call it the Detroit of india. What all companies are here? HM, Ford, Hyundai,Leyland, Eicher, TVS, yamaha and Enfield.
Where as another city which has companies like, Bajaj Auto, Kinetic,Volkswagen, General Motors, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat,Peugeot, mahindra,John Deere, Force motors, never bosts about it but proves it worth. The name of the city is Pune. I am neither a Maharastrian nor from Pune, but still I will say Pune has much more manufacturing units than this shit hole place called chennai.
Does anyone has anything to say about this view, please come forward and write your post.

Hi to BALAJI, TO ALL TAMILIANS, Shwetha and other who are supporting the place and branding me as a Psycho and also mad, I wanted to reply back long back but was tied down with some work so there is a little bit delay in replying you all.
If all of you go through the entire 168 posts in this blog, you can find out that most of the people have abused Chennai and no one is happy with this place. In my previous post long back, I have asked the people to tell me something that is good or perfect here, no one could reply me back. In my one year stay in chennai, i can assure you that I have never seen a single thing that is perfect here. Please prove me wrong and I will stop abusing your place. I can understand everyone is emotionally attached to anyone’s motherland ( so am I also), but dont be blind. You may know the local language and accustomed to the surroundings so you may not feel the problem faced by the people who are not from here.
I have travelled to far off places in India and abroad, and no where I have faced so many problems as in chennai. You all can just scroll up the blog and can find out the number of places where I have visited and compared with chennai. People here look at people who are not from this place as aliens. Starting from day one my outlook towards this place has not changed. Starting from autos, to roads, to weather, to food, to office people. You people will not understand these as you all are used to all these. One question to you all, have you all ever been to any other place in India or stayed back in you so called sweet mother land.

BALAJI – Please dont sit in the house and shout that your house is the best. Try to move arround some parts of India and then you will feel that why we say chennai sucks. I have never used any foul or band language in this blog, you can go and check any of my posts.

TO ALL TAMILIANS and Shwetha – For you there is only one suggestion, dogs of any breed only shout at thiefs and thiefs cannot be called Sun. You may compare yourself with SUn because of the too much of Sun effect ( read heat effect). I didnt mind your blog much. I am not mentally disturbed and need medication, but you need to open your eyes and see the world. Regarding the link that you posted, i seriously have questions regarding the values put there. Like for work Surat is better than bangalore.Regarding play, i think Goa and Kolkata have the football croud and Mumbai have the cricket croud so how can chennai be in the second place. Last of all, regarding living, Surat, vadodara, Coimbatore are better than Delhi? It can be impossible. I think the person who wrote this article is a psychopath and needs immediate medical attention.

More over i never need to go out of chennai – the city provided me what i needed in the place i needed it on time with correct mixture.Good to hear that you all hated chennai so much – not sure what made you hate so much.

1. Food can never be the factor – You have all kinds of food. I hardly eat idly , dosa . You like to try it try it or else go for good hotels.

2. Auto or taxi , hope when u blob you all might be knowing of call taxi which comes to place where you what to come and drops you on time. you have a meter in it. If you are so specific about money you have auto if you how places else share auto else buses else share van else train or else drive in your own.You have bus facilities based on luxury.

3. Language – Chennai is a Metro city. More over 100% of ppl here are not tamilians. It has equal portion of Tamil , telugu , malayalam , kanandam , french , english(anglo- indian) and hindi speaking ppl. May be all language sounds the same to you(as tamil). No one promoted Tamil or asked you to learn it . English is well understood by ppl to guide you through.Why you would try to correct a custom of a person which he follows its his right to be so. Here may be there is not one there is a group who likes to follow it that way. You dont like it , dont accept it. You go your way no one stops you.

5. Security – world second fastest investigation police service. High security and alert at work.police service.

6. More safe metro of all in the country.

7. Climate – Hot , when we learn to love the beach and enjoy it . As per nature base , chennai is hot by geographic location. Change it if you all could would be very helpfull.

I have read almost all the comments. I like to share few things.

1) LANGUAGE: Most north Indian brothers feel why no body speaks Hindi in chennai. To know this, we have to go back to 1965 and much before. Indian Parliament decided to throw out English and make Hindi as our national language. By doing this, all official communication, exams, information will be in Hindi.(just like Japan, China etc). Tamil politicians were concerned that people in TN did not know basic Hindi since at that time (and still now) most speak and write only Tamil. Therefore it will pose a problem to Tamil people while getting employment in government offices. There will lots of domination of north Hindi speaking people in high posts. This was the primary reason why imposition of Hindi was ridiculed in TN. And later Andra pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, West bengal and other north east states joined the fray and made this a big issue forcing the then congress government to withdraw Hindi as national language. And it made both Hindi and English as Official language for communication, apart from that state governments were given option to include their state languages as official language.
Of course tamil Superiority etc was secondary issue and this was raised only to pressurize the congress government.

If TN and other south and north eastern states did not object to Hindi, then today we might have been lagging in English just like China.

2) FOOD: People here have commented that food here is costly. Even my north Indian friends in chennai have commented the same. But they are failing to understand most of the chennai people here prefer idli, dosa, non veg items which are cheaper but stuffs like butter paneer masala, tandoori, chat items are not favoured by tamil people so it is costly. Apart from that another allegation is tamil people eat the same food daily like idli, rice, etc. I wish to tell that it is their choice. We can also accuse north indians of eating only chapati, dal etc. It is their favored food. So it is not proper to discriminate.

3) AUTOWALLAS: I totally agree with these allegation. They are bad name to Chennai city.

4) MARINA BEACH etc etc being DIRTY: Yes it is not maintained clean but so are the other places in different cities all over India. Nothing new about being in dirty places in India. Just go to Mumbai and Bengal, you will know the real meaning of dirty.

5) NIGHT LIFE: No entertainment, no pubs etc etc. I would like to tell that chennai is orthodox city. People here are not exposed to pubs discos etc. If you see 5 years back there were hardly any hangout places, but things are slowly improving. Having said that, culture plays an important issue here. Generally Punjabi, Delhi people are always energetic when comes to partying, hanging out late night, spending money outside. It is their way of life. But in Chennai, it is more about Savings, being with family, having nice time in beach etc. So i think North Indian friends feel very awkward and uncomfortable in Chennai.

6) CHENNAI PEOPLE BEING RUDE: I would like to say, we cannot generalise it, in India there are people who are very rude and people very friendly. In all cities, states we find strange specimen. So it is not proper to frame a whole community to be rude.

7) CHENNAI BOSS PROMOTING CHENNAI PEOPLE: I have no idea about this, i am not the right person to comment.

On the whole, it depends on each individual whether he likes the city or not. Chennai has its share of flaws and should definitely try to improve it and having said that it has also good things which it must highlight.

I can see a whole outrage of the entire North Indian community getting reflected in this blog, against living in Chennai. I am a Tamilian and I have been living in Chennai all through my life, BUT, I was one of the few lucky ones to have traveled across India and abroad. If not for my exposure outside Chennai and India, I would be hating Chennai as well. I strongly believe that it is only when you are OUT of your home city / home country you will be able to appreciate it better. I believe some of you may or may not have that exposure. People who had such exposure and still rant about Chennai, GROW UP.

People who have not had that exposure, I understand. You obviously hate Chennai, and I would like you people to consider the NAKED TRUTH.

Chennai is the city that has finally given you a job, a place to work (which you could not secure in your home town or in the other so called glorious metros you earn to be). You have landed up a job in a place out of your choice because you are INCAPABLE of getting a job in your home town and top metros. Apni aukaad samjo guys and try to enjoy your short stay in Chennai. Short Stay? yes if you have so much frustration you must already be looking out for a job in Mumbai (which you will never get, too much competition from smart tamils settled in Mumbai) or Delhi (where you have to fight your way out with the people from Chandigargh, Haryana and the people from Eastern states of India) or Kolkatta (god knows what kind of job opportunities are available there) or for that matter Bangalore, Hyderabad. Please do not mistake me, I love India and I love all the Indian states and cities with equal respect I give to Chennai. I have been to all these places and I love them for what they are, irrespective of their goods and bads (the influence could have been because of the cultural heritage, invaders – from other states / countries, politicians, that the city is the way it is). Respect a city or state for what it is and don’t judge the city based on your bad experiences. I know a lot of north Indians who show a genuine interest in learning the local language and culture and speak very good Tamil. They are survivors. When the situation is tough Survivors survive and Losers run away. It is your choice to be a Survivor or Loser.

Like any other city, Chennai is changing. It is shedding its conservative attitude and catching up with the World. It still tries to maintain its Cultural Heritage via Bharatnatyam (no, it was not Tamil Nadu natyam, it is Bharatya Natyam, one tiny example for representing India and not Tamil Nadu alone), Carnatic Music, Silk Sarees, Idli and Dosa. I know so many north Indians who in their first salary in Chennai buy a silk saree for their mom / sister / wife. Lot of people call their friends / family to chennnai for shopping, show them around the temples in and around Tamil Nadu, take them to Mahabalipuram or Dakshin Chitra (again represents the four states that represent the Dakshin region and not just Tamil Nadu). Those are the people who appreciate and respect the local cultural heritage and we Tamils reciprocate.

Obviously if a group of people consider Chennai as a bad place to live, they are still welcome and we try to make Chennai a better place to live with their feedback. But feedback is what we welcome not such emotional outburst with all the ‘F***’ word and ‘S***’ word thrown in, I am trying to make you guys understand without all these words. I hope you will appreciate the fact that out of all other metros Chennai is a place that has offered you employment. If you consider work is worship, then you should consider the city that offered you employment as a place of worship. I am sure none of you will use bad words, complain about the cleanliness (infact you should volunteer to clean it), comment on the food offered in your respective places of worship, then why DO on Chennai. Its just a humble city that is free of terrorism, natural calamities, tropical weather (and offers you many Air-conditioned bus services), friendly people, good food at all affordable prices (when people in Mumbai eat idli, dosa for breakfast why can’t you), if you are not able to appreciate it we understand ignorance and immaturity. But STOP posting such nasty comments which will cloud the minds of people.

A small exercise – Go to Google and try typing your favorite Metro followed by ‘Sucks’ (like Mumbai Sucks, Delhi Sucks) and see how many postings you will see. Reading them will show the outsider perspective of your metro. Understand and stop all these postings. There should be a time where you should not get any post in Google against India sucks, Chennai Sucks, Mumbai sucks……..

I can agree to the point that you may have seen few north indian guys picking up Tamil language ( I have personally seen two guys), but if you ask them, I am sure they will also hate the place and language. I think they had to learn the language as they were facing lots of difficulty in day to day life, so they were forced to learn it. Please dont compare Bangalore or Hydrabad, they are anyday better city than this place called Chennai. Personally when I was in Bangalore, I knew and could speak Kannada language, and I learnt it on my will. In both the above mentioned palce, if you donot know the local language, still you can survive. I wont compare food from the above mentioned places with Chennai, as the variety that the above mentioned palces provice Chennai will never be able to provide in ages to come. Regarding transportation buddy, i fail to understand why did you compare Delhi and Kolkata. Ya chennai has a vast coverage of MTC buses, but did anyone you ever boarded one ( not the volvos). The body shakes, seats are like benches. In delhi the modes of transport are buses, autos, taxis, metro and to add to that most of them run on CNG so less pollution. Check out the delhi transport system, they are much comfortable than the shitty MTC buses. Pathetic Kolkata transport? Have you ever been there? The modes of transport there are as follows- metro, local train, bus, mini bus, auts, taxis, trams, ferry, hand pulled rickshaw. Dont dare to compare Chennai with Delhi or Kolkata.
Regarding roads, you can have only one road to boast about, and that also made by collecting toll from the general people. Check out other places, they have more than one roads which are better than ECR, and still they dont collect toll.
Regarding food, let me just support my previous point. If you have such variety in food and innovation, why in any celebration you all serve the same vada, idli, sambar, pongal, etc?
Regarding night life and bars, firstly they are too costly compared to the service they offer and secondly they close by 10- 11 PM, whereas in other metro cities, night life starts at 10 PM and continues till early morning.

There is an absence of tamarind and an abundance of oil. This is one reason North Indians have more cases of heart disease, diabetes, cancer, etc. than South Indians…because of diet.

The extravagance of North Indians is also a function of Muslim domination and intimidation. Because in North India Hindus there always existed a fear that Muslims will attack and steal all of their savings, most people spent their earnings on clothes, make-up, jewelly, etc….This tradition remains true even until today. This is quite apparent in Punjab and Rajasthan. That is why, today there is an emphasis on good clothing, furniture more in the North than the South.

The Salwar Kamiz is a Middle Eastern form of dress that many many many North Indian women wear. Even if they are old Hindu women. In the South, after marriage, traditionally women wear only saris. Although today it is changing drastically. Salwars are worn by men in the North too while in the South, the dhoti is traditional men’s wear.

Heck, it wouldn’t have mattered to me even if it was Marathi because it does not directly affect my way of living in any manner however, I would’ve been a proud Maharashtrian if Marathi was a classical language. It’ll hurt if you are burning in envy but envy on what? I’m a Maharashtrian from Bombay, I’ve stayed in Chennai and I’ve got no problems with Tamilians; same with my other friends from Pune and Bombay, then why do you have problems? I can regard this as difference in our maturities and flexibility. Me and my other Maharashtrian friends think, Chennai is different; it doesn’t suck. It’s got a different culture than yours but you are free to do your things there. There are enough places for entertainment and man, there’s the Unwind Center. If you are into rock and metal music, Chennai is the place to be only second to Bangalore. If you are into gaming, there’s Blur, Nyx, The Den and Zap. If you are into art/theatres, Chennai is at par with Calcutta. If you are an active party-goer, there’s quite many pubs/discs for you as well. Try http://www.indivibe.com to connect with other people in your city for parties. Yeah, it closes down by 11:00 pm but so does it in Bangalore too. If you love beaches, need I explain it? Marina beach is being beautified now with yacht and sailing clubs waiting to be introduced, Muttukadu and Mudaliarkuppam are popular water adventure spots in the city. You got everythin’ you need that’ll keep you entertained supported by an efficient transport system. Now, if the buses in Chennai rattle, you must ride the ones in Pune. From my experience, Chennai buses are pretty good for Indian standards. There’s also the suburban train network; makes me feel at home(bombay) .
I’m not a chennaite but I’m at a loss to understand, why on earth do you guys hate the city if all of us loved it? You think, we didn’t notice the negatives? Of course we did, we lamented just as we would in Bombay but eventually got along with our lives and extracted the best from the city. Yes, we would make fun of them but we strictly stopped at simple jokes taking care to not be seriously racist like Soul-mate. Surprisingly, the negatives we found in Chennai weren’t a lot different from the ones in Bombay therefore won’t be a lot different from Delhi or any other North Indian city. Just live it up and don’t fuckin’ tell me that you’ve tried to find something good in the city for 2 years but failed to do so. That means, you are not really looking. FYI, Chennai is one of the favorite destinations for expats, mainly Koreans. To my surprise, they write good things about the city so you guys are obviously over-reacting.

To the rest of the people who are trying to prove that Chennai or Tamil Nadu is the best place with the best language, please try to have your facts right. All you have written regarding moguls and other races coming to india and ruled the entire North India. But the language and words used by you all proves what kind of educational and family background you all come from. This forum is just just to express ones frustration when anyone comes to Chennai and what all difficulties one has to face. Please try to accept the problems with chennai as nothing can be perfect. Let me clarify you that we never came down here searching for jobs, but the companies settled here got us from different parts of india as they were not able to find talented and skilled people like us in Tamil Land. Any north indian who works hard here will not be appreciated, and tamil people who are the bottom performers in office will get good projects, hikes and onsite asignments as they are tamils. Junaid, the successor of Qasim, finally subdued the Hindu resistance within Sindh. Taking advantage of the conditions in Western India, which at that time was covered with several small states, Junaid led a large army into the region in early 738 CE. Dividing this force into two he plundered several cities in southern Rajasthan, western Malwa, and Gujarat. The Arab chroniclers claim that he acquired immense wealth, slaughtered large numbers of infidels, and returned.

Indian inscriptions confirm this invasion but record the Arab success only against the smaller states in Gujarat. They also record the defeat of the Arabs at two places. The southern army moving south into Gujarat was repulsed at Navsari by the Solankis and Rashtrakutas. The army that went east, after sacking several places, reached Avanti whose ruler Nagabhatta Pratihara trounced the invaders and forced them to flee. After his victory Nagabhatta took advantage of the disturbed conditions to acquire control over the numerous small states up to the border of Sindh.

Junaid probably died from the wounds inflicted in the battle with the Pratihara Rajputs. His successor Tamin organized a fresh army and attempted to avenge Junaid’s defeat towards the close of the year 738 CE. But this time Nagabhatta Pratihara, with his Chauhan and Guhilot feudatories, met the Muslim army before it could leave the borders of Sindh. The battle resulted in the complete rout of the Arabs who fled broken into Sindh with the Rajput clans close behind them.

In the words of the Arab chronicler, “a place of refuge to which the Muslims might flee was not to be found.” The Arabs crossed over to the other side of the River Indus, abandoning all their lands to the victorious Hindus. The local chieftains took advantage of these conditions to re-establish their independence. Subsequently the Arabs constructed the city of Mansurah on the other side of the wide and deep Indus, which was safe from attack. This became their new capital in Sindh.

Thus began the reign of the Imperial Pratiharas and the Rajput Period of Indian History.

In the Gwalior inscription it is recorded that Nagabhatta “crushed the large army of the powerful Mlechcha king.
Following their victory the Pratiharas spread their rule over North India. The Guhilot Rajputs under their leader Khommana (Bappa Rawal’s son) captured Chittor from the Mori Rajputs (who had been weakened by the Arab raid) and the Chauhans established a kingdom in North Rajasthan.

The Arabs in Sindh took a long time to recover from their defeat. In the early 9th Century the governor Bashar attempted an invasion of India but was defeated by Nagabhatta II and his subordinates, Govindraja Chauhan and Khommana II Guhilot. Even a naval expedition sent by the Caliphs was defeated by the Saindhava Rajputs of Kathiawar. After this the Arab chroniclers admit that the Caliph Mahdi, “gave up the project of conquering any part of India.”

The Arabs in Sindh lost all power and broke up into two warring Shia states of Mansurah and Multan, both of which paid tribute to the Pratiharas.

Indian gov. wants to devlope because it can be the medium other than english to communicate thoughts between two states having different languages. Addition to that gov. agreed to add new words in Hindi from sanskrit and other indian languages to make it convienent for all.
While Gov. is giving protection for classical indian languages: Sanskrit, Kannada, Malyalam, Tamil and Telgu.
Protection is in terms of making these languages not infected with other languages words.
Hindi was supposed to be the medium of communication because more than half of indian population can converse in hindi.

There are 8 states which made hindi as the sole official language.
In other states also it is there with other languages.
There are some issues with Hindi raised by Tamil nadu. As far as I know all are inspired by politics.
In this blog people used to call Hindi as a regional language. But may I know which region is that??
Is that north India? But I’m from west India and we speak Hindi.
As far as I know in central India also Hindi is the only declared state language.
Even if it is only north India (for me west too), it includes more than 10 states.
total of 422 million speakers, If any other language can gather that then nobody will have any problem to make that as official language of India.
If few people thinks that there native language will disappear because of Hindi then it depends on them.
If somebody thinks that they will feel uncomfortable because they don’t know hindi, then they should read constitution about languages what gov is ready to provide if you don’t know Hindi. you will not have any problem if you don’t know Hindi but definitly you wil gain more if you will know Hindi.
