Chennai seriously sucks. Left late from office as i was waiting for Bala sir, but unfortunately he was very busy. So decided to take a bus. It was so crowded; those stinking tams were falling on me from all sides. And the bus was give-up, it halted at at every bloody stop even the mini buses went ahead of it. I thought of getting down at SRP stop but to my surprise it didn’t halt there, which i suppose was due to its stoppage at a signal before it. It kept going and i finally got down near the railway station, which was kilometers away from iit. I was so furious at the conductor but didn’t speak a word out, i have always been like this; har cheez to ghoont ghoont ke pii lena aur eek lafz bhi nahi nikalna. Kept on cursing the tams, this place and the bus. I missed my Asar due to the fucking bus. Couldn’t stop the tears coming out, i wish S was a reality and with me. I would have spoken my heart out at this. What made chennai get the metropolitan status is a mystery to me. Narrower roads, garbage all around, poor connectivity and above all the language Tamil. I have no idea how people manage with such a rude language, there is absolutely no sweetness associated with it. When someone speaks it is like he is throwing stones at you.
I am never satisfied with what i have; i already have a nokia 6600 but now planning to sell it and buy D500. There are so many people to talk to but i always look for S. But i have never been that close to them to tell all these, might be. I have many friends but that’ jigree yaar ‘ has always been missing from my life.

Sure thing Kiddo.
One thing I do understand u are not a tamilian .
Actually that was pretty obvious. But i live in mumbai now and I find very lil difference between the 2 metros apart from the fact that there is “beeda spit” all over the place here and I cant fucking understand Hindi and Marathi. I share ur strong dislike for a language other than my mother tongue.
Granted that divorce rates along with teen pregnancies and premarital sex among the youth are much higher in Mumbai than in CHennai, but still I wish ur highness would accept Chennai also in your ” exalted ” list of Metropolitan Cities.
With love
A Homesick tamilian
Venkat 02.24.08 at 1:48 pm
How dare you insult other people’s language? If you can’t speak Tamil it is not Tamilian’s problem. Do you have any social sense at all when you call someone’s language rude - how would you feel if someone calls your mother names. Your narrow mindedness shows through your words and your blog. I hope you mature and see things in a different light and perspective at a later part of your life
resteri 07.19.08 at 4:53 pm
For some reason the assertion that there is no “sweetness” with the tamil language resonated with me.
I’m american here on business and can comisserate
Chennai is not a beautiful city, but I have seen beauty in surrounding areas
You must take the good with the bad.

alrighty now
Chennai is one city I so totally love! True, i hated it when i came here but with time i’ve learned more goods than bads and i wouldn’t think twice before declaring that its one of the best cities in India
as far as metropolitan status is concerned..so dude..even delhi doesn’t deserve that..before u jump to any conclusion..i’ve lived in delhi most of my life and love the place..but look around and see whether is this the way the capital of a country be treated?? Look at calcutta with all the pollution and narrower roads that u can ever think of and please dont even get me started abt mumbai. You land at mumbai airposrt and the first thing you see from the airplane window is a slum dwelling!!
Now i dont have anything against these cities, but yes thats the way it is!!
The language Tamil-which has a brilliant and rich literature btw. Infact u should be proud that people stick to their language and try to preserve it. Look what we did to Hindi!! please don’t tell me u talk in hindi. You’ve ruined the beautiful language hindi beyond repair.
Its a language..learn to respect it. Learn to respect the diversities of this nation, that is what will keep this country together
Sharique 07.24.08 at 9:22 pm
Swati,
Few posts are written in a fit of rage and you just cannot help it. It happens with everyone, doesn’t it? Do you really think about the goods of a thing when you are venting your anger? Infact, you try not to leave even a stone unturned in the castigation. That day was just that day.
I have no shame in accepting that I am still not that matured to accept things the way they are.

Nishant 09.19.08 at 12:08 pm
Chennai Sucks. Its a very big truth. I agree with that watever Sharique wrote. But Bus facility wat I can see is good here, probably Sharique went by Green dibba bus, which rns on low fare n u’ll not get good people there. During the office hours u’ll face the same problem of buses in delhi also, but its too crowedy here.
Good points about chennai:
1. Chennai is more safer than Delhi n Mumbai, not only in terms of terrorist attack, but also in terms of security During late night.
2. I like music here, but that is either classical or AR rehman’s.
Bad abt chennai:
1. Everything is named on METRO- metro water, metro transport, metro train……a long list , but u’ll not get any feel of metro here. There is no METRO train in chennai at all, but they call their local train as metro train. hahahahaa, it was too funny 4 me when I became to knoe that.
2. Chennai is the only metro city where u’ll never get any taxi or auto for meter. they hav digital meters but they’ll never agree to go on meter. there is 0 probability 4 that.
3. Tamil language:
Its for all of you, HINDI is not a mother tongue 4 more than 80 crores in india, All have to learn it during there schooling coz its our RASHTRBHASHA. n Tamil nadu is in INDIA n INDIA is always above than any individual state. If sombody wants to converse in HINDI n u r not able to follow, then its ur problem everytime, not of a HINDI speaking person.
4. Wat u’ll feel wen u comes 2 visit jaipur n u find all the busroutes written over the buses in any of the rajasthani script. n in chandigarh in gurmukhi. Same we feels here, most of the routes in tamil only- no hidi no english.
5. Many people understands hindi, if u’ll hire a auto he’ll speak in hindi n at last he’ll treat like he dosen’t know wat is hindi.
6. Venkat How can u expect respect for ur local language when u r not respecting ur own national language, I had a problem with a courier service provider n I was talking in english, after 5 minutes he told me its tamilnadu, u’ll have 2 speak in tamil if u want to get resolved ur problem. I told its india n u shud speak hindi, u know wat he tells on that. Its not india, its tamil nadu, n state is on higher priority.
7. Most of the people here doesn’t know anything about other parts of india, they never want to read history of india. They thinks that chennai is the whole world.
8. Chennai people claims that chennai is cheapest metro in india:
k, following is the list of prices in chennai:
AAta- 30- 33 rs per Kg.
Daal arhar(toor, sambhar wali daal for madraasis)- 60 rs per Kg.
Banana n naarial paani shud be cheapest here but this is more than for wat it is in Rajasthan(jaipur) n delhi.
People here doesn’t know that in wat sense chennai is cheaper than Delhi n Mumbai.
that is price of land. Its too costly in Delhi n Mumbai.
9. One of my tamilian friend said me that North indian guys r spoiling there girls, How funny it is……………
10. They used to talk about their culture, on every topic if they don’t hav any thing to say, they’ll start to talk abt culture, they hav proud on there culture.
But here is the biggest truth for them:
They doesn’t know the difference between religion, culture n lifestyle.
They thinks that in which life style they grew up,that is the only culture in whole world, n if sombody is not following that means he or she is uncultured.
But they shud under stand that culture always follow the lifestyle n lifestyle changes after every new inventions.
Its a very long list…………..
everybody is not like that wat ever I described here, I got some of the good people. U’ll feel some irritation in every metro(but chennai is not a metro, hehehe….).
yahna mein ne kuch achhe log dekh kuch bure, lekin, yeh such hai ki yahna per log dilli aur mumbai ki bajai thode sahi hein. Per ye log bahaut jyaada frustrated hein aur reson hai north indians. north indians ne last kuch years mein inki lifestyle ko bahaut jyaada affect kia hai, usi wajah se ye sabhi frastoo ho gaye hein, per kuch log yahna achhe hein, kuch log yahna bahaut achhe hein, aur kuch bahaut jyaada achhe per bahaut saare log gande.
Who is responsible for the condition of chennai:
1. Chennai autodrivers.
2. Some of the house owners n brokers, they r concerned only to money, they r not thinking how it is impacting there city.
3. After all n on top their Government, I felt people were not like that, Tamil nadu state Government made them against HIndi n north indians to get political advantage.
4. North indians are also resposible for the condition of chennai, We don’t have anything in our hands, but atleast we can make good relations with them. Half of the noth indians hav some type of superiorty complex after being here, this shows their attitude to tamilians n they get frustrated.
5. Tamilians r biased most of the times.
6. Tamilians shud make friends out of tamil nadu, they r not friendly even with malayalis, telgities n with kannadigas u can’t expect….
Solutions:
These suggestions r for all indians-
Always make good relations.
Don’t b biased.
Always give equal opportunities to everybody without asking abt his/her native.
Try to speak in Hindi, it’ll not kill ur mother tongue, coz at home I always speaks in my mother tongue.
Don’t think that watever u r going to do will b benificial for the person from ur state or not. Always thinks that it shud b good for every indian.
Always thinks that wat u r doing, How it will impact ur city n nation.
Auto drivers r same every where, So don’t relate them with any state n religion.
Special comments:
Some people r extreamly good here n for the goodness of an individual I’ll give more points to people here. coz I know if south indians will come to delhi in same amount then delhi people r not going to treat them well.
But they r frastoo.
I found sounth indians in narrow mentality but still the ratio to hav a south indian friend comparitive to north indian is 6:1, means out of ten south ndians u can hav 6 friends, out of 10 north indians also u’ll hav same six, but 5 will be cheater.
one north indian friend will company u in any condition, but all the 6 south indian friends will b ur friens for a defined limit.
Its better to hav a limited friendship instead of having a friendship with 5 cheaters.
I hav lot more, if topic will b continued, I’ll write again……

Nishant has clearly let all his frustration out.
I liked the way you have tried to express yourself rather your thoughts about chennai which, for sure are (atleast for some) reflection of your experience(s) in Chennai. CorrectDa.
I am a native tamilian & not a chennaite. From my experience of staying out of Tamil Nadu for the last 18 years, I really understand your frustration. In my initial days outside Tamil Nadu when I was in Himachal & worst was that I did know hindi at that time. I was usually(very easily) caught up in situations where I just cannot understand what other people are saying except few words which I learnt in Hindi when I was growing up. It was really a mess for me & really frustrating.
It is better that you stayed in Chennaim rest of tamil nadu even down south is increasingly worse for you. Chennai is metro & people have adapted to a mindset which fits well in the fast moving life. But deep inside tamil nadu north indians are like aliens & avoided. I have seen my parents, nears & dears doing it. This mentality is real crap. As kids such values were instilled into us & stereotypes automatically started taking there shape.
Personally I feel that I had always been very narrow minded all my life till the time I was in TN. But when I came out of my native land, met people of all various cultures, got to understand them well; now I know that all the stereotypes which developed in our minds were all negative thoughts & there is no truth attached to those.
We have a very narrow minded approach.
I did not get at all what you were trying to convey from the Special Comment.

It is well said that its the people who make the city good or bad and its the worst place to be .
gupta 12.09.08 at 5:54 am
The people are really bad and during rain it becomes a swiming pool the weather is bad and you cannot speak with people as they only know tamil and sometimes not even tamil its a the food is just idli and dosa and people were lungi and if you are a boy then you will crave to see a beautifull face .
unknown soul 12.09.08 at 6:38 am
Chennai? what to tell about this place. Whatever you see you will feel like hating it. You will see people coming out of expensive cars but no shoes or chappals. All bare feet. These people will not even try to understand any language except Tamil as for them thats the language of the world. Regarding food? you will die of hunger but will not get quality food. And its not me all my colleagues who are not from this place will echo the same. These people think that anyone who is from outside chennai is an alien and shold be treated like that. Tamil Nadu is a part of India , that is a fact if you are not here. Once you are here you will understand that this place is not outside India but out of the World. Waiting for the day that I will be out of this hell. Everyone please pray. Counting my days.
