But i live in mumbai now and I find very lil difference between the 2 metros apart from the fact that there is “beeda spit” all over the place here and I cant fucking understand Hindi and Marathi. Granted that divorce rates along with teen pregnancies and premarital sex among the youth are much higher in Mumbai than in CHennai, but still I wish ur highness would accept Chennai also in your ” exalted ” list of Metropolitan Cities.

Chennai is one city I so totally love! True, i hated it when i came here but with time i’ve learned more goods than bads and i wouldn’t think twice before declaring that its one of the best cities in India
as far as metropolitan status is concerned..so dude..even delhi doesn’t deserve that..before u jump to any conclusion..i’ve lived in delhi most of my life and love the place..but look around and see whether is this the way the capital of a country be treated?? Look at calcutta with all the pollution and narrower roads that u can ever think of and please dont even get me started abt mumbai. You land at mumbai airposrt and the first thing you see from the airplane window is a slum dwelling!!
Now i dont have anything against these cities, but yes thats the way it is!!
The language Tamil-which has a brilliant and rich literature btw. Infact u should be proud that people stick to their language and try to preserve it. Look what we did to Hindi!! please don’t tell me u talk in hindi. You’ve ruined the beautiful language hindi beyond repair.

I am a native tamilian & not a chennaite. From my experience of staying out of Tamil Nadu for the last 18 years, I really understand your frustration. In my initial days outside Tamil Nadu when I was in Himachal & worst was that I did know hindi at that time. I was usually(very easily) caught up in situations where I just cannot understand what other people are saying except few words which I learnt in Hindi when I was growing up. It was really a mess for me & really frustrating.
It is better that you stayed in Chennaim rest of tamil nadu even down south is increasingly worse for you. Chennai is metro & people have adapted to a mindset which fits well in the fast moving life. But deep inside tamil nadu north indians are like aliens & avoided. I have seen my parents, nears & dears doing it. This mentality is real crap. As kids such values were instilled into us & stereotypes automatically started taking there shape.
Personally I feel that I had always been very narrow minded all my life till the time I was in TN. But when I came out of my native land, met people of all various cultures, got to understand them well; now I know that all the stereotypes which developed in our minds were all negative thoughts & there is no truth attached to those.
We have a very narrow minded approach.

I visited Chennai in Dec and last week because my friend (from Delhi) works in Chennai. Even as a tourist from Hong Kong, I am sorry to say Chennai is a very difficult and unfriendly city for visitors from other countries or even from other parts of India.

I perhaps don’t know much about India or TN, my limited experience tells me that people in Chennai should learn English if not hindi.

Probably not many people will be speaking Tamil 20 years from now. Chennai has changed a century in five years. Five years ago, this was a big traditional village where no girl felt safe wearing jeans. You better have your dupatta draped just right. The problem with the guys is that they were not allowed to mix easily with girls growing up and seeing them just as people. So when the Tamil guys grow up–they go nutz and have a porn film going on in their head for every girl they see. Then they blame the girl.

Chennai was an incredibly traditional town, but because money talks, a lot of the old values left, but many have been caught in the adjustments and transitions. One generation is light years away from the other.

Then like Mumbai, a lot of villagers decided to shift to Chennai. They brought a coarseness and rudeness that wasn’t in the town before. They made it a lot more crowded. Go to Marina beach and you will see a pig stye.

Bangalore is not just a six hour train ride from Chennai. It’s a whole other world. There’s a laziness and unconcern about the city. Just throw rubbish anywhere. Pee anywhere–why? Do you want the girls to look? I don’t want to be gross, so I’ll leave it there. Tamil guys are taught no modesty while girls are expected to cover up in baggy clothes. We don’t like to see you swim in your soaking underwear. While if we show a leg, well it’s no marriage proposals for us if Auntie happens to see us.

The most exasperating thing about Chennai is that it so easily could be the best metro. Tamils, you are known for your pride–of your culture. Use that pride for your metro city. Hey, and the metro city is meant for foreigners and people from out. They bring you lots of money. Remember? You like money. So be more accommodating. Hi Randeep singh, what ever you have written is exactly right. I think who ever is not from Chennai feels the same. I think this place more like a village, which has not seen any outsider, so we are like alien or foreign items for them, so they stare at you like that.
The incident of office that you have written is also right. It is the only place I have seen where hard work is not appreciated, and brotherhood is appreciated. I have seen people slogging their A** and never recognised as they are not Tamilians, and people who dont work are appreciated, promoted and highlighted as they are Tamils. How can so many companies settle in such a asshole place? How can these companies dont go to other place so that we can also relocate to better place?

you asked to give opinion or option or suggestion to Tamil bosses. We all have atleast have tried it once. But for the Tamil bosses, they does not appreciate the inputs, and by mistake if they listen to the inputs, they will consult with their tamil brothers, and then if they like it they will accept it. If the input is accepted also, the appreciation will not be for the poor soul who came out with the idea, but the tamil brother who is closest to the manager will be appreciated.
This is again a point learnt while staying in the land of Tamils.
Open question to all Tamils, tell me one thing that rocks in Tamil Nadu or Chennai, I will not compare that with any other city, but you have to proove it that it rocks. They speak english so well that any voice and accent trainer thinks twice before taking any assignment in Chennai.
They are so efficient at work that they donot have to appear for any assessment to be promoted (make sure the Boss is Tamil as well) and they are so friendly and social that the moment they are out of chennai they will plead and pray to come back to this shitty place(because outside chennai they may not get a Tamil Boss or people who speak proper English —so how will they be promoted??????)

The fame of their film industry is legendary—whenever someone talks about bad dress sense, aged and fat hero, voluptuous heroines, Ravan look alike villains, weird fight scenes, unnecessary rape scenes, they refer to Tamil movie industry.

6. Safer than other metros
7. Movies.. not the new movies tho. I am 25 year old and still cant get enough of Sivaji Ganeshan’s movies.
8. Discotheques, Pubs.. although we cant Mumbai/Bangalore on this one, you will find a lot if you know where to look

And if you know Tamil I could add some more points, but I would assume all the haters here don’t know Tamil.

And to answer your question for best food try #4, best drink?? mmmm

11. Dharmasala
12. Mysore
13. bangalore.

The above mentioned is the list of places I have visited after growing up and I could have added some more which I visited during childhood. I am not adding them as I dont have a clear memory of those cities.
And after comparing with those cities which I have visited I can say that Chennai as a city sucks. Have you ever visited any of the above mentioned outside your so called Tamil world cities in your entire life?

1> Marina Beach. You call it a beach? Never maintained, dirty, full of waste and shit. Even small beaches at Puri or Shankarpur or even Digha has better beaches. Which are clean and tidy.
2> ECR road? have you been to DND FLyover at Delhi, outer Ring Road in Bangalore, or Rajarhat in Kolkata,they are better roads. I left out the Mumai Pune Expressway as comparing that road to ECR is like an insult to a road of that kind. How can ECR have resturants in it? The resturants are at both the side of the road. Learn English first.
3> Have you been to Haridwar or Hrishikesh or Kali temple at Kolkata, or Haji Ali at Mumbai or Golden Temple at Amritsar. They are anyday better temples. Here if you walk a kilometer, you will find temples, so volume wise I am sure the number is surely high, but quality, you wont get it.
4> who the hell on this earth wants to go to a resturant and have IDLI? If I need to go to a resturant I will have variery of other options. Thanks chennai for not giving me options of variety of resturants, I am able to save a lot and my entire credit card outstanding is Rs.0.00.
5> Tidal Park. Have you seen EC or ITPL in Bangalore, or Infinity at Kolkata, or any other Software Technoloy Park in Noida/Gurgaon, you will understand what I mean to say. Tidal Park can never come close to it.
6> Safer than other metros? Safety in which respect.People dont have normal driving or riding sence. They drive on the wrong side, use lights on high beam, never use blinkers, never wear helmets, triple riding on bikes, buses are over crowded and also rashly driven, auto drivers thinks that they are the son of Rajanikant and drive like hell without any sence.
7> Never seen any Sivaji Ganeshan’s movies so cannot comment. I know old is gold so I also watch olden movies may be hindi or english or my language. But still I get time to watch the quality new english , hindi and also regional movies. But sad to say, you being of this generation, you also dont watch those crappy Tamil movies, which can be compared to porn movies. Hats off to you dude.
8> Disc and pubs. Boss please dont talk about it. I am not a guy who regularly goes to disk to waste my money. I prefer sitting at my house, watching movies and drinking during my off days. Here you dont get any quality liqur at any of the so called liquor stores called tasmac, so I have stopped drinking. Again a lot of thanks for saving my money. To add to that, discs and pubs, do you know the meaning of that. I have seen better places.
As per your note you dont know where you get your traditional drink in your city? So as you dont know your city, how can we outsiders know better.

Think once, if a tamil goes to karnatka or kerala and he tries to talk in english or hindi(if he knows) and the next person says I don’t know HINDI(even if he knows) and says that this is Kerala state and you should know MALAYALAM to live here and he is not ready to response you. Then What you will do? This is the real incident which happened with me more than 5 times and used to happen every person out of tamil nadu. Is it correct that we should learn all the language in india or we should go with HINDI.
China also has a lot off diversity in language but they also decided one language and named that chinees which is not spoken by more than 40% of china population. They never converse in english in their country.

You told about english, how many south indians or specifically Tamils are there who can speak proper english without MTI ( Mother Tongue Influence). I think not, because for analyzing you need brain, for brain to work you need proper nutrition. But as per your staple diet, dosai, idli, pongal, it has no nutrition, but only carbohydrate. Those carbohydrates gets converted to Fat and so brain full of Fat cannot analyze anything. So the end result is what ever anyone says in your language you accept it, as you do not know any other language.

I will agree to the fact that people have gutkha/pan masala/pan. No issues with that point and I accept the point. Regarding porn movies. I generally do not watch porn movies. But still if I have to watch, why the hell will I watch Tamil porn. Moreover if you have time please see the movie Memento, from where Ghajini is copied, you will understand how that guy has raped and killed the movie. Regarding getting bald. I have seen many people going to some temple and getting bald. For them they donate their hair to the temple. Boss tell me the logic of donating hair in a temple. Is that a thing to donate? You can donate money, ornaments, etc but why the hell is hair.
Moreover it is the only place where I have seen 60+ hero working with a 20+ yr heroine. What kind of logic is that. He may be a hero of the past, so make way for the new generations. I accept whatever you have writte. I have worked in Bangalore and also Hydrabad. I can understand both the language to some extent.
But please do not compare them with HELL called Chennai. I have travelled many cities in india and by far the most backward city I have seen in Chennai. Even Tamils who have worked in other palces also say or the same.
I still believe that I am an indian, but if you stay here you will seriously feel that you are outside india. I tried hard to find out some positive aspects of this city and found none and so started blogging about it.
If you need to know chennai please come and stay here for a couple of months and you will understand what I mean to say.

I’m working in chennai and tring to get adjusted here but the efforts I had to do is more. After completing two years life is more simpler than earlier. But people who ever is tring to prove chennai good here should look in to the problems instead of giving stupid comments. People from chennai have not visited any other place in india thats why they think chennai is good, which is correct if you will compare it with other places of tamil nadu.
I’ll not say that delhi is an ideal city but chennai is no where comparable to delhi or any other metro. not even with some other cities. People here always talks about culture: you should think that others are also cultured. LUNGI PAHN NA CULTURE NAHI KAHLATA TRADITION HOTA HAI. culture is what ever you are wearing that should look cool and should give a immpresive.
If I WEAR RED COLOUR SHOES WHY ONLY TAMILIANS ASK ABOUT IT?? IS THERE SOME THING RELATED TO YOUR CULTURE HERE ALSO THAT YOU SHOULD NOT WEAR RED COLOUR SHOES. If I have long here why only tamilians or some other south indians come and touch my hair(my friends can do that, but the person in my office should not do like this). If I spent my whole salaryin my way what is the problem with you guys. Ever I asked you that why you don’t spend a good amount on your living. If I’m going to post a letter, one south indian asked me what is it? and with out asking me he took it from my hand(he was not my close friend, just hi -hello kind of friendship from office). But my room mate from north never asked me that to whom I posted that. This is the problem with most of the tamilians and little of the other south indians.
Here I have proved that what ever things I found in tamilians can irretate any body.

I want to clear my stand once more, I don’t curse city for its physical location or climate but yes I always wants to move from here because of that.I don’t hate all the tamilians but I found most of them only for that.
I hate tamilians when they start talking about culture assuming that we are coming from jungle.when they don’t have any other point to win in a discussion.
Why they are always more concerned about my dressing and style . If they don’t have muscles then I can’t do anything. They should start to jog to reduce their tummy.
I hate auto walas and state government here. I hate people who believe blindly in their politicians. I hate people lying road side after drink.

I also accept that I had some good time in chennai and some bad also. It was bad because of localits thats why I hate tamilians generally. But it doesn’t mean that I hate every body with out knowing about him, but yes ,my experience gave me a view to genralize something about the tamilians.
I accept, I found some good people also here but most of them also accepted later that they also don’t like chennai people and government.
My problem is not with city its only with people. Most of them haven’t seen any place out of tamil nadu and tirupathi and think that

I appreciate your latest post on this topics i would like to say “well said”, to be frank i was actually sad to find the so many North Indian having such hatred for their fellow country men form the south specially Tamil in particular because we don’t speak the language or share the same food habits.But again that is India ,It is a great nation with greater diversity in geography ,demography and culture,food & language accepting one another with their own individuality is the essence of unity in any relationship ,let it be a community or an individual. So let us all try to find common ground were we accept or even tolerate sometime and try to rout out the division among us.As the saying goes united we stand divide we shall surely fall. I am here in chennai for the last 10months or so.I am from AP and I’ve stayed in Bangalore also. But this is the most annoying city I’ve ever seen!!!!
First thing is most of the houses dont have Windows and the rents are like
………oh my God.I was about to hit a house owner for asking 12k as rent for a small house, not even the size of a single bedroom, but converted to double bed room.
I have nothing to comment abt Tamil as its their language,but Hindi should also be accepted, if not English.
The autowalas charge nothing less than 10 rupees per km, which is equal to the fare of Innova with A/C.
Driving skills are awesome here. People wait at the extreme left of the road at signal to take a right turn. One thing, if you can drive safely in Chennai, you can drive any where in the world.
The Beach here is so damn ugly, I prefer not to go that side. I dont say everywhere it is or it shud be clean, but chennai beach line tops the Shit Rank.
Tamilians are definitely biased.In my client office here in Chennai, only Tamilians will get appreciation and good hikes. All the others are just junk to them. You sit and work till you A** bleeds but you will get a comment “Should do Better”.

This week I will be completing one year in Chennai, and seriously speaking I didnt find a single bit has changed. Nothing here will channge for the next few centuries to come. My suggestion to everyone try your hard best to leave this city as soon as possible.
I am also trying hard, but got stuck due to recession. One opportunity and I am out. I will not look for whether that is a better or not. I will just relocate frm this hell.
Anyone who has stayed here can understand the frustration .

Hi,
Another point to prove that Chennai sucks and it is a overhyped city. People here call it the Detroit of india. What all companies are here? HM, Ford, Hyundai,Leyland, Eicher, TVS, yamaha and Enfield.
Where as another city which has companies like, Bajaj Auto, Kinetic,Volkswagen, General Motors, Tata Motors, Mercedes-Benz, Fiat,Peugeot, mahindra,John Deere, Force motors, never bosts about it but proves it worth. The name of the city is Pune. I am neither a Maharastrian nor from Pune, but still I will say Pune has much more manufacturing units than this shit hole place called chennai.
Does anyone has anything to say about this view, please come forward and write your post.

Hi to BALAJI, TO ALL TAMILIANS, Shwetha and other who are supporting the place and branding me as a Psycho and also mad, I wanted to reply back long back but was tied down with some work so there is a little bit delay in replying you all.
If all of you go through the entire 168 posts in this blog, you can find out that most of the people have abused Chennai and no one is happy with this place. In my previous post long back, I have asked the people to tell me something that is good or perfect here, no one could reply me back. In my one year stay in chennai, i can assure you that I have never seen a single thing that is perfect here. Please prove me wrong and I will stop abusing your place. I can understand everyone is emotionally attached to anyone’s motherland ( so am I also), but dont be blind. You may know the local language and accustomed to the surroundings so you may not feel the problem faced by the people who are not from here.
I have travelled to far off places in India and abroad, and no where I have faced so many problems as in chennai. You all can just scroll up the blog and can find out the number of places where I have visited and compared with chennai. People here look at people who are not from this place as aliens. Starting from day one my outlook towards this place has not changed. Starting from autos, to roads, to weather, to food, to office people. You people will not understand these as you all are used to all these. One question to you all, have you all ever been to any other place in India or stayed back in you so called sweet mother land.

BALAJI – Please dont sit in the house and shout that your house is the best. Try to move arround some parts of India and then you will feel that why we say chennai sucks. I have never used any foul or band language in this blog, you can go and check any of my posts.

TO ALL TAMILIANS and Shwetha – For you there is only one suggestion, dogs of any breed only shout at thiefs and thiefs cannot be called Sun. You may compare yourself with SUn because of the too much of Sun effect ( read heat effect). I didnt mind your blog much. I am not mentally disturbed and need medication, but you need to open your eyes and see the world. Regarding the link that you posted, i seriously have questions regarding the values put there. Like for work Surat is better than bangalore.Regarding play, i think Goa and Kolkata have the football croud and Mumbai have the cricket croud so how can chennai be in the second place. Last of all, regarding living, Surat, vadodara, Coimbatore are better than Delhi? It can be impossible. I think the person who wrote this article is a psychopath and needs immediate medical attention.

Point to be taken care: Why chennai people are so proud?? why they say that they are proud on chennai. why north indians are cursing these tamils.
Truth is here: Chennai was founded by britishers. So chennai people should not feel bad if some on is abusing chennai. North indians should not blaim tamilians for the condition of chennai.
I’m not biased and I’ll say that chennai has its good and ugly faces. At least 50% of Tamilians are not normal and has unnecessary proud on their culture which looks funny to others.
Dear Tamilians, Please go out of tamil nadu and see how is your country? at least don’t think that your life style is the only culture in india.

I do agree that chennai is not that good as we expect from a metro but its more secure than delhi and mumbai at least being a north indian.

Attitude of people in chennai is not good but I know all tamilians are not like that.
