Now it has started mocking against Islam. Rediff has a long way to go! The vicious agenda is condemnable. Over the past few days it has highlighted the comments who have opposed Sania Mirza.

But it can publish them on it main page as if it were its own huh?
If you go through this then you will realise that the major discussion is between ideologies. Some are opposed to Sania wearing short clothes and others want this Muslim image associated with her to be ignored to the background. I don’t understand one thing, how is her wearing short clothes harming Islam. I wrote something on her before.
I remember that they even issued a fatwa against Sania Mirza for wearing short clothes and how un-Islamic it is. Those terrorist organization also chipped in..behte gange me sab ne haath dhoya..even threatened to kill her and so her security cover was increased. So what if she wears short clothes or even a bikini, she never claimed it to be Islamic or tried to insinuate this notion of modernity in Islam. She acted according to her wishes and as an individual she has every right to do so. Why is someone concerned about her being according to Islamic principles or not? Every Muslim knows that she is being non-conformal to the rule of Shariah. There was absolute no necessity of the fatwa. So this puerile attitude of the mullahs brought shame to the religion because of infidels who are waiting to pounce upon any given opportunity to castigate and malign Islam.
This sort of mentality will not help muslims. Let her live and no one needs to be told that she is not doing Islam a favour! And as far as rediff is concerned, I have nothing more to comment. By constantly highlighting so called ‘backwarrness’ of Muslims it has made clear its agenda.
In the U.S., the old journalistic adage was `Jews is News’. In India, it seems, anything that shows Muslims as ignorant or fanatical helps propel TRP ratings, while rational comment is frowned upon as unhelpful. A Muslim MP was asked recently to take part in a TV debate on whether there should be reservation for Muslims. He agreed, but added that he would argue against it. The channel’s reporter then tried convincing him that “surely your community needs reservation. When he didn’t agree, the channel lost interest in putting him on air. One studio guest recently advised Muslims to shed their `persecution complex’ and to not forget that theirs were the “hands that built the Taj Mahal. Though no one would dare accuse Dalits of “doing nothing to uplift themselves, Muslims are blamed for their poverty and poor education. They are gratuitously advised to study hard, as if the problem of lack of schools, delinquent teachers, inadequate books, and poverty can be remedied by will power alone.

A divisive agenda seems to be a selling proposition for media across the world.
Ya, I saw that. You are right. Actually I had also noticed. Rediff is like…it had (has)a tilt towards soft kind of Hindutvaa. May be because they feel that such stuff gets more hits.
Over the years I have realised that on ground level you may have 5-10% people who are really communal and a fraction of even that figure would dare to speak up publicly. But amongst netizens, the percentage of lumpens is much high (it could be true for all communities including Christians, Muslims, Jews etc).
Anyway, so Rediff also panders to such baser emotions. They know their target group, the users including NRIs, where I sadly find more anti-Muslim bias. The columnists which they earlier chose also suggested the same. Their headlines have been provocative quite often. But then, what can one do. I have grappled with this problem. At how many fora you raise voice or your just sit up and let everybody mock you or you write on your blog or you do a campaign for every such thing on a million blogs and sites or you go to mouthshut.com and write…..But you have pointed it out correctly.
Good post, Shaarique.
Anything that is anti-Muslim works well these days in the media. The right-wing Hindu folks rejoice over it and go on to call the media pseudo-secular and minority-appeasing.
@Adnan: “Tilt towards soft kind of Hindutva?”. Eh, Rediff might as well be called the online version of Pioneer.
Even I was thinking of posting about the issue, but you’ve mouthed my words, Shaarique.
Rediff sucked always… And was just blown away by the fact that Sania practices Islam… hehe… never paid attention to that part of hers …
Adnan,
Yeah i too have the same feeling. NRIs are more anti-muslims as compared to people here in India. May be thats because of terrorism and they tend to associate us with them. But surprisingly quality education, which NRIs get doesn’t help in removing that biasness.
Nazim,
Thanks…may be you should read that article on IM
Sagaro,
rediff sucks!
Typical of you
NRIs are non resident Indians I presume… I’m afraid but I think you do them an injustice by stereotyping them. NRI’s who live in the USA as a minority are aware of what it means to be one and are therefore very supportive of minorities in India and elsewhere, and usually come out very strongly in their support. NRIs are certainly not anti-muslim or anti anything that hurts a minority.
I Me My,
I really don’t know about the situation there but as far as i have seen NRIs are more concerned about the religion they belong to. Kashmiris have always been accused of funding the terrorists and RSS & VHP are also funded by NRIs. But then i cannot generalize this statement…i say this based on news articles i have read.
From my experience, NRIs are likely to be more opinionated simply because 1) they can compare India with the countries they experience and they realize whats good abt India and whats NOT. 2) They get the opportunity to have a thrid party objective viewpoint.
i’ve formed most of my views abt minorities after leaving India. I’m absolutely convinced that they get better treatment than ANY OTHER PLACE I’ve seen. i had no opportunity to form that view in India.
trip,
i agree!
