I don’t believe this..Italy won! WTF . Did they stand any chance against the mighty France, who were star studded with players of the calibre of Zidane and Henry, no! It sucks when it finally melts down to penalty shootout. It all depends on luck and its really saddening that all the days hard work is finally left at the mercy of luck. Perhaps the wordcup should adopt the ways of European championships (aggregating the goals at the end of 2 matches) to ensure a more fair and just result. I was so happy when Argentina was avenged by Germany’s defeat at the hands of Italy but that ecstasy seems to have died down after France’s defeat.
AND THIS WAS TRULY INSANE OF ZIDANE

Zinedine Zidane has written glorious chapters in football’s recent history - how sad that he should save the most shameful episode for the final page of his story.
The script was set up for arguably the finest player of his generation to finish his France career with a second World Cup win before closing the book.
And with an early penalty to give France the lead, and increasing influence over tiring Italy, everything was in place for the perfect finale.
Zidane then chose to cast a giant shadow over his reputation and career with a senseless head-butt to the chest of Italy defender Marco Materazzi, who equalised his early spot-kick, in extra-time.
Confusion reigned as Materazzi lay prone, but the referee’s assistant saw the assault and to the disbelief of all inside Berlin’s Olympic Stadium, Zidane saw red.
It was a calamity on all levels for Zidane and France as Italy went on to win 5-3 on penalties.

And whatever words or actions of provocation Materazzi may have offered Zidane, his reaction was simply inexcusable.
It seems Zidane was taunted by Materazzi. Few suggest he was called ‘dirty terrorist’ and few say Materazzi used profanity agaisnt his mother. Whatever it was, it did the trick for Italy!!
UPDATE- Zinedine Zidane has apologised for his headbutt on Italian defender Marco Materazzi in Sunday’s World Cup final.
But the French legend does not regret his actions, alleging on television that Materazzi provoked him by insulting both his mother and sister.
“It was inexcusable. I apologise,” said the 34-year-old Zidane. “But I can’t regret what I did because it would mean that he was right to say all that.”
UPDATE 2- Zinedine Zidane should be allowed to keep the Golden Ball Award for the World Cup’s best player, according to Marco Materazzi, the man he headbutted.

crazy headbutt huh ?
and I only rooted for zidane anyway.. . not really for France. They’re too racist for my taste :p
that is so devastating!! :(( zidane is glorious - sad that he should have such a vicious temper!!

but this episode, though it’ll be talked about a long while come, will not blemish his magnificent career!!
oh and IMO materazzi should’ve bin man of the match!!
oh c’mon!! :O
you’re not seriously comparing the dumbass materazzi with Coppola and Al Pacino’s genius?? :O :O :O *horrified*
but it would make a good plot - except that all blockbusters MUST have the good guys winning in the end!!!
but france lost… :((
Did the trick for Italy??? Don’t think he couldve actually done much in 10 minutes anyway. Not with their rdefence and Buffon.
And Materazzi is not racist is the common belief. He may be rough, but he is supposed to be pretty tolerant. And Zidane hasn’t exactly been an angel all his career.
It takes time to really get on the nerves of a player like Zidane. And who knows he might have doing that since the beggining..they are many rumours floating..can’t be certain though
@raytracer:
it’s not wat zidane could’ve done for the match, but for his team. when he left, so did the team’s confidence!! :O
oh - and wit him, france just might have won penalties!!
@sharique:
haven’t seen chaos 2006. what’s it about??
To the very end of his career, Zinedine Zidane could dictate the flow of play with rare skill and elegant control of the ball. In the World Cup final, Zidane lost control of his temper
He was sent off for violent conduct after headbutting Italy’s goalscorer, Marco Materazzi, in the chest in the 110th minute. The game ended in a 1-1 draw and Italy won the championship after a penalty kick shootout.
Both Zidane and Materazzi refused to comment on the incident. Zidane’s agent Alain Migliaccio said, “[Zidane] told me Materazzi said something very serious to him but he wouldn’t tell me what.”[13] Reportedly, the deaf forensic lip-reader Jessica Rees was employed to analyze the video sequences with the help of an Italian translator. According to these reports, Materazzi spoke in Italian - a language understood by Zidane due to his time spent with Juventus F.C. - and first told him: “Hold on, wait, that one’s not for a nigger like you.” As the players walked forward, Materazzi allegedly said: “We all know you are the son of a terrorist whore.” Then, just before the headbutt, he was seen saying: “So just fuck off.” [14] [15] According to Brazilian TV Rede Globo, a lip-reader claimed that Materazzi twice called Zidane’s sister a prostitute.[16] Earlier claims about Materazzi having called his opponent a “dirty terrorist” have been denied by Materazzi, who reportedly said: “It is absolutely not true, I did not call him a terrorist. I’m ignorant. I don’t even know what the word means.” [17][13]
On July 10, 2006, Zidane was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player in the 2006 World Cup. The winner was selected by a poll of journalists covering the tournament. Zidane narrowly won the award with 2,012 votes, closely followed by second place finisher Fabio Cannavaro, who polled 1,977 votes. Although the polling continued until midnight, most votes were cast during half-time, prior to the headbutting incident
