Research in a IIT

by Sharique on July 12, 2006

People talk at length and many flaunt about the prospects of research in IIT. Outsiders often wonder the level of research and the kind of equipments available in an IIT, the premier institute of engineering in the country. I have talked to people and they often express their awe at the facilities available in the labs here. Well the truth of matter is IITs exist because of JEE and not because of the research. IIT is ranked 5th in the world when it comes to Btech but that rank touches 3 figure when it comes to post graduate education. The reasons, well there are many and the most prominent among them is lack of funds. I understand India is still a developing country and to be at par with the world class institutes you need much more than brain power. No doubt Indians have out-performed their counterparts in US universities but with foreign facilities right?

My previous guide left his job in California to teach here in IIT Madras. But he soon realised that things are a lot different as they appear from outside. He resigned within 1 year and is now back to where he came from. Facilites are pathetic and so are the bureaucrat procedures to get a job done. Just to buy a book he had to wait for months!! Considering the fact that it is Madras, where are people are more educated compared to other parts of the country and it is expected of them to realise the value of time. Corruption is a lot lesser as compared to the place where i come from. (Bihar to be precise :P )

I had to take few print outs today. When i asked the person responsible, he denied me saying this is for the final copy ones so use the other one. Well this ‘other one’ was a wipro printer (perhaps the first one to be come on the scene!!). I was wondering how do u feed papers in it? Finally i left because i had no mood to experiment.

Update 1- I am sweating but still can’t switch on the fan! the reason; i am suffering from severe cold and would be comfortable if my fan runs at speed level 3. But the regulator doesn’t work! damn we pay 13,900 per semester to the hostel office which includes 3,500 as hostel maintenance charges and look what facility. If i lodge a complaint tomorrow then it would take weeks before someone is sent. Where does the money go? in the pockets of concerned officials! I have heard there has been lot of politics regarding allocation of mess contract and lot of exchanges below the table (unconfirmed reports say that there are a slew of court cases pending against the authority). Well so why is IIT ‘the’ institute in this country because you see its all relative!!

Update 2: I took the print outs outside. Went to the lab to give it the prof but he was not there so finally had to give it to the same phd scholar who fobbed me off yesterday. He was sitting in the adjacent room to where the printer for ‘final print outs’ was kept. The first question n he, asked seeing the print outs, “that room is closed na?” wow! damn it, i took those print out of my own money and how dare you suspect me!. I am not a thief and plus my would i! i have a laptop that is worth double the laptop u are using !!

that’s my hostel

I always knew IIT was tenth rate, when it came to research. In the past 6 years, they havent come out with one marketable patent. Where as Stanford, which IITians compare themselves to, produces 8 marketable patents a week.

Hi friend,
Whatever u wrote is right.
But, when you come to research that is different from regular B.Tech/M.Tech, because its need a long time to understand the work was done by others and to fix our problem to do. As you told, Indians research for back than some of other countries, I will agree with you,you mentioned in your profile, you are eaggerly waiting to settle in life. In a country like India, people mostly want security, so we can’t obstruct them. The interested ones work, and it is important to motivate them to work, instead of just giving him a problem and asking him to submit in some predetermined years. Hence, lack of motivation, interest and security to these scholars are the main reasons for the downfall of our research.

Might be but lack of funds is also an important issue. If the facilities are paramount then it encourages the reseacher to carry on. Perhaps we need to increase the stipend awarded to scholars so as to make sure they stay in research field. Research is the key for a nation to progress.

Truth word by word….I am telling you abt research scenario at IITB….labs in mechanical deptt are in pathetic state, some still carries 1960’s equipments…professors are more like politicians, they don’t allow research students of other profs to use their labs so as to put any possible spanner in activities like paper publication as it decides a prof’s progress…

In this situation probably one would bang his head with wall. If Govt. funded IIT is so pathetic then wot about rest of the institutes.I was searching for researches carried out in IIT & guess wot i found none.I wounder why shouldn’t gr8 minds go out to get their brains polished, cuz the best insti’s of this country doesn’t offer brushes.lol….
so is Brain Drain
In my opinion they should take up some initiative which should motivate youngsters to actively take part in these programs.
