P.S. 2 There has recently been a patent office established to cater to the increasing demand of patent registration...not to forget, many registrations for the patent have been from my friends, who are in the second year and took up summer projects under our professors...one of them has requested the patent for an environment friendly air conditioner....and yes,the M.Tech. 's are a bit under-performing but those who have come from other institutions after a B.Tech. mostly if you get yourself extended from B.Tech. to M.tech here. you know you are brilliant and nothing can stop you and it doesn't!

Well well, read all what so many of "us" have written...i won't say what you are saying isn't true...but ill tell you my own experience...I am in the fourth semester..n it's been an amazing journey...excellent professors, H C Verma performing electrodynamics experiments right in front of you..what else can you think of?n well, somebody said there' s no research going on in IIT's...well i guess u just don't know how to go to a professor's website and see his activities...am in IIT Kanpur and hav met atleast half a dozen professors...who hav come from MIT and Princeton..to teach us...and IIT's are not all about the facilities and research...it's the students that make up what it is...that's what the difference is between an IIT and IISER or IISc,because teachers teach and students study...and research..well just recently my faculty guardian won the Budding Scientist award for outstanding research...so it's more of an experience that has been described rather than a true story..or maybe that could be the case of the respective IITs...not IIT Kanpur...i might seem to boast but...I am an IITian and am really proud of it... (P.S. i forgot to mention..each of our hostels has a printer as well as your department and the computer center, you just need to have an id card or a professor's consent and that's isn't difficult to get if you are a good student..)

All these points are correct. In India due to lack of security and money living standards of people including those who crack JEE is much worse than people in foreign countries. so each one wants to make money to improve his/her condition. Due to this, instinct to do research is buried in the corner of their hearts. Only IITians shouldn't be blamed for this condition.

I agree totally with you. I'm totally appalled at the quality of research work that goes on in the institute and especially the quality of MS/PhD students we are able to attract. All this despite having some world class professors. Hell, my PhD advisor didn't even know how to construct a single grammatically correct English sentence! let alone talking things that make sense. May be 1% (??) of their work gets used in the industry.

One reason may be that most of the industries that do R&D are not located in India. (This has changed significantly in recent years.) I know a few BTech students who decide to fight everything and do MS, PhD in IITs. The fate of them is kind of sad.

I guess the only hope of quality research getting done finally comes to our hands. Attempts like CFI, IIT Madras have proven to be really awesome in supporting passionate students with ideas by providing them resources and a place to work when they want to work. All the bureaucratic shit and MTech students who close labs promptly at 5 PM cast a bad light on the research culture the IITs aim to establish.

In this situation probably one would bang his head with wall. If Govt. funded IIT is so pathetic then wot about rest of the institutes.I was searching for researches carried out in IIT & guess wot i found none.I wounder why shouldn't gr8 minds go out to get their brains polished, cuz the best insti's of this country doesn't offer brushes.lol....
so is Brain Drain
In my opinion they should take up some initiative which should motivate youngsters to actively take part in these programs.

Truth word by word....I am telling you abt research scenario at IITB....labs in mechanical deptt are in pathetic state, some still carries 1960's equipments...professors are more like politicians, they don't allow research students of other profs to use their labs so as to put any possible spanner in activities like paper publication as it decides a prof's progress...

[...] Anyway so the bottom line is the best brain in the country don’t always make in to the IITs. But that doesn’t mean they don’t make in big in their careers. Its just a matter of time and as the famous proverb goes Jo jeeta wahi sikandar. So to project IITs as something prerequisite for the development of India is not fair. I wrote a post on research in IITs. People talk at length and many flaunt about the prospects of research in IIT. Outsiders often wonder the level of research and the kind of equipments available in an IIT, the premier institute of engineering in the country. I have talked to people and they often express their awe at the facilities available in the labs here. Well the truth of matter is IITs exist because of JEE and not because of the research. IIT is ranked 5th in the world when it comes to Btech but that rank touches 3 figure when it comes to post graduate education. The reasons, well there are many and the most prominent among them is lack of funds. I understand India is still a developing country and to be at par with the world class institutes you need much more than brain power. No doubt Indians have out-performed their counterparts in US universities but with foreign facilities, right? [...]

Might be but lack of funds is also an important issue. If the facilities are paramount then it encourages the reseacher to carry on. Perhaps we need to increase the stipend awarded to scholars so as to make sure they stay in research field. Research is the key for a nation to progress.
