Everything is sponsored

by Sharique on December 20, 2006

Our Sania ji’s sponsors must be quite happy after her recent Doha success. She has endorsed every brand she could lay her hands on. So here are the sponsors

1. Pendant from Kundan Jewellery

2. Bangles from Navratna

3. That SEKC nose ring from Hyderabad jewelers.

4. Lipstick from Levon

5. Belts and bags from ??? (I think a gift from her ever-young-just-30-going-on-31-Amma)

6. Swiss watch

Damn her ears are not visible!

A day after she clinched the mixed doubles gold at the Doha Asian Games, India’s youngest sporting icon Sania Mirza returned to her native Hyderabad on Thursday (December 14).
Mirza missed the gold in the Women Singles as Chinese Zheng Jie overcame the 20-year-old Indian 6-4 1-6 6-1 in a clash lasting almost two hours.
Mirza, who enjoyed a breakthrough 2005 when she became the first Indian to claim a WTA title and reach the top-50 in the women’s rankings, has had a relatively disappointing season.
But one gold and two silvers at the Asian Games have put her back on the winning league.

“Obviously I’ve had a tough year, It’s been a very average year but at the time when I had to peak, I did. I think I am playing the best tennis I ever did and I think my fitness levels have gone up quite a few notches and that has helped my performance a lot and I think I worked hard in the last one, one-and-a-half month and I’m happy that it’s paying off now,” Mirza told reporters after arriving at her native Hyderabad.

We Indians are masters at making someone a star over small successes. Remember Hrishikesh Kanitkar? He was a hero after he played the magnificent knock against Pakistan in Dhaka. He cemented his position in the team for another year but unfortunately his newly found stardom was quickly forgotten because of his poor performances. Same is the case with Sania ji. Lets see. She is only 20, she has been from 20 for long i guess..hmm…may be 21, and a long time before she ties her knot so fingers crossed.

The gold at the Mixed Doubles event was sweet revenge for Mirza and her partner Leander Paes, who won a bronze in the 2002 Asiad in South Korea.
Though Mirza said all players aimed at the gold medal, she was happy by playing good tennis.

Ya, little bit, you are disappointed (at losing out on the gold medal), but having said that, I played some great tennis and I think Zheng (Zheng Jie of China) just deserved to win on that particular day. I didn’t play with my best tennis but I think I gave all I had and I think that’s more important. I gave my 100 percent but you know, silver is not so bad either,” Mirza said.

Sania beats Hingis!!

by Sharique on September 28, 2006

I was crazy when I saw this. Finally Sania took her revenge from Hingis and that’s what I call sweet revenge :D . People had written her off after her dismal performance in the recent grand slams and plus her loss to Hingis in the recently concluded Kolkata open. This win will go a long way in boosting her confidence and I hope she continues her winning streak.

Sania Mirza has beaten former world No 1 Martina Hingis in Korea Open 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 and taken revenge for the Sunfeast Open semi-final defeat.

Sania lost the first set to the Hingis, who is currently ranked 8, but came back strongly taking six games in a row to win the second set 6-0 in the $145,000 tournament on Thursday.

From then on Sania was unstoppable winning the third set and the match 4-6, 6-0, 6-4 to send the No 1 seed out of the tournament in Seoul.

Its tough performing consistently on international arena. She raised people’s expectation after her brilliant entry into Women’s tennis. She kept the tempo and also the expectations, that finally India has a women’s tennis player of international repute, high when she broke into top 50. Her highest rank being 32, the best by any means for a woman tennis player from India or perhaps in the men’s arena as well. How far did Vijay Amritraj go? No doubt Mahesh bhupathi and Leander Paces have brought laurels to India by domination the men’s double event but India today still lacks quality women athletes. Kunjarani Devi remains the only Indian woman athlete who won a medal at Olympics (not sure about this stat).

Talking of tennis, Monica Seles and Jelena Dokic are my all time favourite. I, for some reason or other, never liked Steffi Graph. My dislike for her further grew when Monica was stabbed by a fanatic fan of Graph.

Monica stabbed during a match

I can never forget those epic matches between Seles and Graph. Monica Seles still remains to be my favourite player till date. (Same as first love remains all your life :P ). I really can’t compare the techniques of Sania Mirza with someone like Monica. Sania doesn’t have a well built physique like Steffi but she does have the agility. I have increasingly realised that tennis as a game is more of power play rather than being agile on the court. Williams sisters and Amelie Mauresmo prove my point further.

BTW no one can me more beautiful than her
