Why Chernobyl cannot happen in India?

by Sharique on April 9, 2007

When Mr. Raja Ramanna came to IIT Madras to give a lecture after the Nuclear plant at Kalpakkam was setup, he was bombarded with the safety concerns as Madras is just 80 Kms from Kalpakkam. The only answer he gave was, “Chernobyl cannot happen in India because our engineering not as inquisitive as the Russian ones”. Expectedly he was booed for this response of his. Well the Chernobyl accident occurred because engineers trying to test safety of the plant committed a big blunder. Due to a faulty program the power generation fell to 1% of 35000 MW, electric (the normal output). They were so scared that they immediately restarted the plant but in the process the remnant radioactive product increased the heat generation. They tried to control it by reinserting the control rods but it broke.

Chernobyl plant after the blast

The results were devastating as 1000s lost their lives after the blast. The USSR tried to play down this magnificent disaster but the Time magazine expose left them with no option. Its often considered the fuel to fire of rebellion that existed among small USSR states. There are few interesting facts about nuclear energy I wish to highlight-

1. Hitler had plans to build a nuclear bomb but a wrong information with one of this consultants help prevent it. Actually you need at least 14.5 Kgs of enriched U-235 to sustain a uncontrollable chain reaction. His advisor guessed it to be few tons which was not possible to accumulate in 5 years period so they abandoned the plan. Imagine the terror that would have been unleashed if his consultant had the correct figure.

2. The Three Mile Island accident in US was the first accident of peaceful use of nuclear energy. US was lucky that the plant didn’t explode because their engineers weren’t that adventurous. It was caused due to a faulty pump.

3. The Chernobyl disaster caused over a million death which is much lesser as compared to Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The radiation reached as far as Sweden.

4. India conducted its first nuclear test in 1974 at Pokhran. It was code named ‘The smiling Buddha’. Mr. Raja Ramanna, who was one of the 3 persons who knew about the test beforehand, had a hotline to Mrs. Indra Gandhi, PM of India. But the hotline failed after the blast so he came to the nearest village to call her, “Madam, the Buddha has finally smiled”

5. There is something known as the China Syndrome. Its a movie that released 13 days before the Three Mile Island accident and incidentally it showed a nuclear plant accident caused because of a faulty pump! The syndrome goes like this- in case of a nuclear explosion in US a huge crater will be created and the underground water will become radioactive. This theory assumes that the crater will be so big that it will stretch till the other end of earth to China. Well obviously this theory is just a farce as the maximum depth can be 10 kms.

6. I am a CIA agent.

Regarding Mr. Raja Ramanna I mention in the first paragraph, well I kind of agree with him. My father is a senior engineer with government of India so I am aware of the realities in power plants. There is one incident I still remember; an engineer called my father late in the night because he was not sure which grease to put on the transformer and because of that the whole district had power cut. It was really weird for the engineer to call my dad as he is not directly responsible for maintenance of power plants as he has risen to the higher level in the hierarchy. The engineer later told him that he didn’t want to take the risk by his own guess or my consulting his immediate seniors because he was not that confident. I hope the engineers at Chernobyl were as dumb as out Indian counterparts.

BTW point no. 6 is a joke, if you haven’t guessed by now. This has been shamelessly borrowed from an email by my Professor Arunn Narasimhan

1) It is a CLOSED BOOK/NOTES Exam
2) Mixed Convection (what Dr. Balaji taught) is NOT included
3) Rest of what I covered will be included (from start until the beginnings of Natural Convection)
4) Calculators are allowed but may not be of much use.
8) Only one computer is allowed and it is already there.

I know there are some missing points above and will be filled to my advantage, when required.
BTW, point 8 is a joke, so smile before you close this email
Cheers,
Arunn

What to expect of a Google OS!

by Sharique on November 22, 2006

I am totally nuts when it comes to operating systems. I have laid my hands on Windows xp and vista (I will shortly write about setting up vista on Lenovo N series laptops). I have tried a myriad of Linux distributions like SuSe, Mandriva, Fedora and Ubuntu. But I so desperately waiting for a Google OS.

I found this article

There’s no such thing as the GoogleOS in reality – but despite that, it is one of the most talked about Web products. People can’t stop discussing it – and even imagining screenshots for it! Seems like everyone expects Google to get into direct competition with Microsoft, by releasing an operating system. However Google refuses such claims and even makes fun of this kind of buzz. Nevertheless we decided to analyze where Google may be heading with their product strategy – and from that determine what are the chances of a GoogleOS.

Possibilities

We see 3 scenarios for a GoogleOS:

  • A web based desktop (i.e. operating system)
  • A full featured Linux distribution
  • A lightweight Linux distro and/or BIOS

We’ll try to explain each of these in detail – then in the conclusion, make our prediction. What’s more, we think this could be less than 6 months away from happening.

Read the complete article. Its ends by

Conclusion: GoogleOS will tackle Microsoft’s Vista OS head on

We believe that everything will become much clearer in the following 6 months. Microsoft will put pressure on Google with its Vista OS, which will receive relatively high adoption just like any other new Windows release (although probably not as high as historically Microsoft has enjoyed!). As Vista’s adoption increases, so will the adoption of its default search engine Live Search. From Microsoft’s perspective, this will have a positive effect on all Live and MSN sites. What end users are looking for is ease-of-use and satisfactory experiences – which in a lot of cases starts from the Vista OS.

In that scenario, Google’s usage rates may be negatively affected. So we predict at that point, Google will start a more punchy strategy – pushing Firefox and some form of Google OS. Yahoo! has already responded to the Microsoft threat in a friendly fashion, by offering a customized IE7 for its users. But we think Google will be more aggressive and competitive and will push their own OS. The GoogleOS may be a reality within 6 months!

Orkut now with Gtalk!

by Sharique on November 6, 2006

Rumours are that google would soon integrate its Google Talk instant messaging and VOIP service into Orkut. Apparently, google talk and Orkut development teams are busy putting the finishing touches on the integration. The announcement will likely be made sometime next week.

This would mean orkut members will be able to text message and voice chat with other members of the community if they choose to communicate in that way and not scrap each other. In other words, this means that orkuters would no longer have to keep asking each other in scraps for IM ids to make their conversations private and one to one.

Another tactic my google to promote its conked Gmail service ;) . Gmail these days has become highly unreliable. I missed few important mails and not just that but also the sender wasn’t even notified about the undelivered messages! At least yahoo informed me regarding it. Gmail is much slower as compared to yahoo mail beta and most of the time I get the default message that gmail cannot be loaded because of slow connection. And there are no in-build smileys on Gtalk. The editor needs a revamp and include a lot of things like superscript, subscript and various other symbols. When Gmail first came in the interface was highly appreciable but the present yahoo mail beta’s interface is far better with drag & drop feature and flexibility of window size and it also includes RSS feeds. Perhaps the only thing that can now google boast off is the search engine. I must confess that Yahoo and MSN search are weird! (especially MSN) I never use them.

Just search for orkut on MSN (click here) and the first result you get is his profile! There is no orkut.com in the first page and perhaps many pages to come.

But I wonder how will this move affect members. I don’t want to add all those 300+ people in my friends list to gtalk! I am someone who logins to orkut only when someone scraps me. I generally aviod as they call orkutting. And then if i login someone or the other scraps me, “if you are online then why don’t you tell me”. The first thing I do is logout. I am not as social as orkut expects me to be :-|

Garima Dhiman further goes on to say (and I love this line :D )

Social networks are almost like living legends now, only if some of them could sustain around 10 more years, i would actually be able to tell my kids something like – “oh! OrkuT – son i actually met your father there”.(PS: this is just an example, infact maybe of the worst case scenario :P )

I have known few who have actually met on orkut and perhaps will end up together. Orkut is still young and time will only tell how many such online contact will lead to long term relationships.

Amit has more on the integration

Its my phone’s anniversary

by Sharique on September 11, 2006

So my dear old mobile celebrates his anniversary today :) perhaps the only mobile to do so in 5 years! I had Nokia 3510, then 2 shady Reliance handsets, one samsung v200, Nokia 6600 and the present one Sony Ericsson k750i. This SE has an awesome camera. But there are drawbacks of this handsets. I am not exactly impressed with it because I had problems with it. The joy stick stopped functioning within 5 months of purchase. I got it repaired and now the camera button is malfunctioning. And plus SE service is pathetic. I had to take this phone all the way to Nungampakkam service station because the local sellers refused to take it. Nokia service was awesome. You can easily drop to any of their shops and get it repaired, even thought you have lost the original bill. I had to submit a lot of documents for SE. But the camera is without doubt the best available in market. The new version of SE K900i has a 3.2 megapixel camera. But the video capture resolution still remains at 170×90 :( Nokia scores over SE in this field….all the latest models of Nokia have decent video cameras with N93 having a mind boggling DVD quality video capture resolution. Here is a brief comparison

1. Nokia is robust but costly and heavy. SE camera is much better than Nokia. Video capture is better in Nokia.

2. Nokia’s service is very prompt and easily accessible. SE has a lot to do in this regard

3. Symbian operating system in Nokia is ideal for tech enthusiast but the Java based SE are not far behind.

4. SE offers free upgrade of operating system through online updates. Its clean and not complex but I had troubles configuring the software initially. There was flash player problems. Remember SE uses the IE flash player and not the firefox ones so if you get the error message like flash player not compatible then update your Internet explorer flash player. SE and IE have a partnership huh? :P

BTW the person in the picture above is certainly not me and most conspicuously the girl is also not my gf :D

Here are few videos of my favorite N93…I seriously recommend this phone and blackjack online
