I saw the Ram Jethmalani video on CNN-IBN long back but thought of commenting on the angry old man after I read Nitin’s post Ram Jethmalani rocks. Well when do people get irritated? 2 case as far as I can think. One when people oppose you and they point out the mistake you have committed. Out of you ego you don’t want accept the mistake and so try to form arguments in support of it. And also in the process try to evade the question by blabbering responses like “You don’t know a thing about it” or “What right do you have to oppose my personal decision” or try to prove his intellectual prowess and this trying to belittle the questioner. Ego comes by age and particularly to a person of his caliber, he without doubt the best criminal lawyer in the country. I respect him and I have high regards for him. But his stature would never have been reduced if he accepts his mistake, to err is human. But the big question is did he commit a mistake my accepting to defend Manu Sharma. Money would have been no issue at all. So why was he angry? Perhaps due to second reason.
Second case is when someone opposes you and tries to transgress the invisible boundary of individualism you have created around yourself. You know you are right but others don’t conform to your views. And then he has the ego of an old man, they generally feel that the younger generation can rarely be right just because of their naivete. That’s the usual generation gap thing. But the younger generation needs to learn respecting their emotions and vice versa. Jethmalani’s views have to respected irrespective of his rant!
Senility brings this peevishness and I sometimes wonder would I behave the same way when I grow old? I was once talking to my friend about this and he remarked,”Imagine your son coming up and telling you that he is in love with another guy and they want to marry!”. Inter-religious, Inter cast marriages might be perfectly acceptable in today’s society by the younger generation but for the older generation it is the same as gay and lesbian marriages are for us, or I would say a normal youth like me.
I had argued about his stand here
A SMS poll by CNN-IBN indicated that 80% of responders approve his decision. Everyone has the right to be defended and if Manu Sharma is really guilty then Jethmalani is no almighty who is going to save him from the claws of punishment. No doubt he,because of his caliber and stature, might get them a reduction in punishment or in the worst case might get them acquainted but are the other lawyers so inept that they cannot argue effectively? Why is his personal decision a national concern? I think everyone has the right to express himself openly without worrying about what others say. But I am also wary of this feeling of mine, Jethmalani might be doing a gross insult to his profession if he has taken up the case for money or to satisfy his ego.

Sharique,
You are quite likely correct in what you say about ego and the general Indian mentality that is condescending towards the younger generation. It is the same mentality that puts septua/octogenerians in the Cabinet.
But in this context, not only was a highly opinionated journalist attempting to corner him, she was not even sure of the facts. She deserved what she got, I would think.

Nitin,
Frankly speaking i don’t think i got the feeling that the reporter was highly opinionated. As a matter of fact i think that she was just like a normal reporter trying to squeeze out the truth.
She should have respected Jethmalani. She shouldn’t have been adamant about her opinions but then she was not well informed, as you have pointed out. But then what more do you expect out of reporter..would she have access to the previous court ruling and the evidences that led to Manu’s accquaintal.
I completely agree with your cabinet part..hope some day we shall have young and energetic politicians. BTW i have this as a suggestion

Sharique,
It is perfectly all right, in my view, for a reporter to be nosy, impertinent and even arrogant as long as she is well-prepared for the interview. Tim Sebastian’s HardTalk is a good example. You don’t challenge anyone, especially not someone who is at the apex of a certain field, on a matter of their expertise without being sure yourself.
As can be seen from the discussion on my blog, it’s not clear she read the Bar Council’s code of ethics. She didn’t have a factual basis for what she said. So all she was flinging at Jethmalani were merely opinions. And he hit the ball out of the ground.
Btw, putting a smiley on that suggestion may prove unwarranted. She may get there yet!

Nitin,
I too noticed that but then i suppose most of the reporters do that. There are very few Prabhu Chawla, Barkha Dutt and Tim Sebastians in the media! This reminds me of a talk my Prabhu Chawla. After his talk he was entertaining questions from the audience. Someone asked him why is that you put all the inane activities of politicians on the front page or as headlines and this definitely reflects your money minded approach to journalism. He was dumb after that!! He evaded the question after sometime by his usual style.
Anyway. She might get there!! I am more than surprised

I dont agree with you. Ram Jethmalani actually was right. Sagarika Ghose hardly knew anything about barcode council or about the case. Ram was not blabbering, but Ghose was blabbering.
Ghose: So you are defending Manu Sharma because you are angry with the press.
Ram: No I am taking his case because he is my client and its my duty.
Ghose: But you said you were angry with the media.
Whata dumb logic… That height of how dumb a person can be. Two things needn’t be related. Just because he said he was angry with the media for influencing the people, it doesnt mean he took the case because of that.
I can point of a million instances in that interview where Ghose was acting like a moron and Ram was amazing…
She can’t question his morality. No one can. The whole thing was a farce and Ram was obviously disappointed about the whole thing.. cauze she was unprepared and her main objective was to sensationalize the issue… which I feel is very wrong…

Sagaro,
I never appreciated Sagarika but i was basically trying to analyze the cause of this angerness. And i agree wholeheartedly when u say
cauze she was unprepared and her main objective was to sensationalize the issue… which I feel is very wrong…
