When my neighbourhood burned

by Sharique on April 27, 2007

As I came out of the bathroom, I could smell something burning. I thought some electric heater could have melted the plastic buckets that people use to heat water. (Well the irony is that this thought came to me when the temperature outside itself could boil water!). I didn’t pay any heed towards the foul smell of plastic burning. I came to my room and settled down. The recent incidents at Virginia Tech have made me too apprehensive about things around me. I visualize someone taking a gun and shooting. The incidents of bravery melt my heart; who knows, some day I too might be a part of it. As I was sitting in my room, I was imagining a big blast in which my room will be ripped apart with me being thrown out of the window. Or a fire might break out in the hostel and people would be running for their lives. The only think I plan to take away with me is my laptop.

Anyway coming to reality. A friend of mine knocked on my door to draw my attention to the burnt out mattress lying outside my neighbour’s room. To my utter surprise, I saw the whole room burnt! The only thing safe was the computer because it was away from the area. People from the wing below us came to stop the fire as the wing mates, including me, were totally unaware of it.

Here are few pictures of the burnt out room

The reasons for this fire are being investigated by our CSI unit (Crime Scene Investigation). Chances are high that monkeys might have caused the fire as they are famous for their smoking in the campus. Some idiot monkey might have dropped the unburnt cigarette in the room.

I’m glad you’re safe. I read about the monkey problem in New Delhi in the NYT; that’s not where you are? Are monkeys a nuisance all over the country? How do they become so unafraid that they walk into someone’s room?!

Saurabh,
No one was there is the room. And you know how haddi’s room is!

I Me My,
They are a big nuisance in our campus. We fear taking our chances against them as they have attacked people in the past. The problem is that our campus is a national sanctuary so they can’t be thrown out!

A National sanctuary as in a wildlife reserve?! That’s terrific; it must be very picturesque.
